چکیده

Population synthesis is used to model the number of neutron stars in globular clusters that are observed as low-mass X-ray sources and millisecond radio pulsars. The dynamical interactions between binary and single stars in a cluster are assumed to take place only with a continuously replenished ”background” of single stars whose properties keep track of the variations in parameters of the cluster as a whole and the evolution of single stars. We use the hypothesis that the neutron stars forming in binary systems from components with initial masses of ∼ 8− 12M⊙ during the collapse of degenerate O-Ne-Mg cores through electron captures do not acquire a high space velocity. The remaining neutron stars (from single stars with masses > 8M⊙ or from binary components with masses > 12M⊙) are assumed to be born with high space velocities. According to this hypothesis, a sizeable fraction of the forming neutron stars remain in globular clusters (about 1000 stars in a cluster with a mass of 5 · 10M⊙). The number of millisecond radio pulsars forming in such a cluster in the case of accretion-driven spinup in binary systems is found to be 10, in agreement with observations. Our modeling also reproduces the observed shape of the X-ray luminosity function for accreting neutron stars in binary systems with normal and degenerate components and the distribution of spin periods for millisecond pulsars.

Dynamics and Interactions of Binaries and Neutron Stars in Globular Clusters Dynamics and Interactions of Binaries and Neutron Stars in Globular Clusters

We model the dynamics of test binaries in isotropic, multi-mass models of galactic globular clusters. The evolution of binary orbits through the cluster potentials is modeled, including second order diiusion terms, and probabilities for close encounters with eld stars are calculated. We carry out Monte Carlo simulations of the eeects of the binary{single star encounters on the binary population...

Binary Evolution and Neutron Stars in Globular Clusters

We investigate the dynamical formation and evolution of binaries containing neutron stars in dense globular clusters. Our numerical simulations combine a simple Monte Carlo prescription for stellar dynamics, a sophisticated binary population synthesis code, and a small-N -body integrator for computing 3-body and 4-body interactions. Our results suggest that there is no “retention problem,” i.e....

Formation of Binary Pulsars in Globular Clusters

Close to 70 radio pulsars have now been discovered in 23 globular clusters, with a record 22 pulsars observed in 47 Tuc alone. Accurate timing solutions, including positions in the cluster, are known for many of the pulsars. These recent observations provide a unique opportunity to re-examine theoretically the formation and evolution of recycled pulsars in globular clusters. This brief review f...

Binary evolution and neutron stars in globular clusters

Improved observations of globular clusters are uncovering a large number of radio pulsars and of X-ray sources. The latter include binaries in which a neutron star or a white dwarf accretes matter from a companion, recycled pulsars, and magnetically active binaries. Most of these sources originate from close encounters between stars in the cluster core; magnetically active binaries and some cat...

Formation and evolution of compact binaries in globular clusters: II. Binaries with neutron stars

In this paper, the second of a series, we study the stellar dynamical and evolutionary processes leading to the formation of compact binaries containing neutron stars in dense globular clusters. For this study, 70 dense clusters were simulated independently, with a total stellar mass ∼ 2× 10 M⊙, well exceeding the mass of all dense globular clusters in our Galaxy. We find that, in order to repr...
